Over 40 dogs were rescued from dire circumstances in Ohio after distressing evidence of their living conditions surfaced online and garnered public attention. The operation, carried out by the Delaware County Dog Warden on Sunday, unfolded on Kilbourne Road property in the northeastern region of the county. Officials swiftly removed a majority of the dogs — believed to be Pit Bulls or Pit Bull mixes — in an effort that spanned approximately three hours.

The Humane Society of Delaware County, the Marion County Dog Warden’s Office, and the Humane Society of Morrow County assisted the Delaware County authorities in this extensive rescue operation. Notably, the property owner was absent during the removal of the dogs. Although there are currently no charges, authorities anticipate legal action.
Mitchell Garrett, the Delaware County Dog Warden, provided insight into the prolonged awareness of issues associated with the property owner, which spans several years. However, prior investigations had only unveiled a manageable number of dogs in satisfactory health conditions, with subsequent complaints lacking the requisite witness statements for further action. A compelling witness statement broke this deadlock, revealing that a larger number of dogs were enduring abusive conditions than previously understood — per NBC4.

A disturbing TikTok video became the catalyst for this rescue after the video went viral and showcased the appalling living conditions of the dogs in Ohio to a wide audience. The footage revealed dogs chained heavily and stationed in muddy or waterlogged conditions with inadequate shelter, illustrated by an uninsulated blue bucket. One distressing scene depicted a dog aggressively biting at their chain.
The plight of these animals drew attention to the property owner’s previous charge of animal cruelty in North Carolina back in 2012. However, authorities in Delaware County have not filed immediate charges regarding this incident.
The rescued dogs are currently receiving care at the Delaware County dog shelter and the county’s humane society, supported by Rico Pet Recovery, a nonprofit organization dedicated to their well-being.
