If you’ve ever lost a dog and wondered if it will return, this story will renew your faith in reunification. That’s because a dog in Florida returned to her parent a full seven years after she went missing – and it’s all thanks to microchipping.

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Jazzy was last seen at her Fort Worth, Texas, home on the Fourth of July. During a fireworks display, she ran away. Her dog dad, Kerry Smith, probably assumed he’d never see her again. But seven years later, the pup was discovered in a Florida motel room without food or water. Orange County Animal Services took her in. Thanks to a microchip scan, workers were able to locate Smith and alert him to the dog’s whereabouts.

Smith hopped on a plane to Orlando and was reunited with Jazzy at the Orange County Animal Services’ facilities over the weekend. He plans to bring his long-lost pup home and help her recover.

The Miracle of Microchipping

One can only imagine how Jazzy made it all the way from Fort Worth to Orange County. What is clear is that microchipping made it possible for her to return home.

Smith offered this advice to other dog parents: “My message to everybody is to chip your dog. And I knew as soon as she went to a vet that I would get the call that I would be waiting for for seven years,” he told WESH 2 News. “I always wondered if she was alive, I always wondered if she was happy, if she was feeling well, and she’s not now, but we will get her better.”

Jazzy is just one of many recent stories of dogs reunited with their pet parents after an extended period of time. A dog that disappeared from a Philadelphia Wawa store recently resurfaced, alive and well, after 18 days. A pair of stolen Beagles was also traced and returned to their dog dad in Wales after three years thanks to microchips. And yet another pup was reunited with her dog mom after an astonishing 12 years apart.

Thanks to microchipping technology, if you lose your dog, you don’t have to lose hope, too. It may only be a matter of time before they return.
