A Minneapolis man and his dog are nursing serious gunshot wounds after two people fired inside a camper they were in. There were three occupants in the camper van at the time of the shooting. Reports say the third person, a female, didn’t sustain any gunshot wounds.

Man and his dog seriously injured in Minneapolis shooting over the weekend

On Sunday, Feb. 25 at around 8:17 a.m., the Minneapolis Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at Thomas Avenue North, where the camper van was. Upon arrival, officers found the unnamed man — whom they say is in his 40s — with life-threatening gunshot wounds. The dog, too, sustained serious injuries, as per KSTP-TV News reporting.

Police say the man, woman, and their dog were in the camper van when two people showed up, opened the door, and began firing.

The injured man was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), while the wounded dog was taken to Minneapolis Animal Control for treatment and care. Authorities haven’t disclosed the dog’s breed and their progress so far.

According to police, the victim and the people behind the reckless shooting know each other. However, it remains unclear whether the assailants targeted the dog or if the pup was accidentally struck by gunfire.

At this point, authorities have yet to make any arrests. The incident is still under investigation by the Minneapolis Police Department, who hope to soon unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This shocking incident comes barely two weeks after a Chicago man shot a dog to death on the street. The dog — who had escaped his leash prior to the shooting — died on the spot. Sadly, these rampant occurrences highlight the threat that gun ownership poses to animal welfare.

Dogs have increasingly become victims of gunfire. While there are those who’ve been lucky to survive a shooting ordeal, a good number, sadly, have succumbed to their gunshot wounds.
