Disabled Senior Dog Found Chained with Frozen Water, Needs Home

The Huron County Humane Society in Ohio is on a mission to find a forever family for a disabled senior dog found chained to an old truck trailer with nothing but a bowl of frozen water next to him.

On Nov. 29, 2023, the Huron County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with the Huron County Humane Society to rescue the neglected 14-year-old dog — now named Shadow — from a property in Townsend Township. He is currently fairing well under the care of his shelter family, who spoil him rotten.

Upon his rescue, the Humane Society discovered Shadow’s back legs can’t stand on their own. As a result, he’s forced to rely on his front legs to drag himself around. According to Cleveland 19 News, veterinarians at the Up & Running K9 Rehabilitation examined Shadow’s condition and learned his disability is permanent.

Unfortunately, Shadow suffers from a progressive disease known as Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) and, therefore, will never walk normally again. This disease affects a dog’s spinal cord, brain, and nerves, and can ultimately cause hind limb weakness and paralysis.

Thankfully, the Humane Society confirmed Shadow isn’t in pain. With proper care, he can lead a quality, fulfilling life like any other healthy senior dog.

At the moment, Shadow has a specially fitted harness and wheelchair to aid him in his movement. All that’s remaining is for him to find a loving adoptive home. Due to Shadow’s vulnerable state, the Huron County Humane Society says they’re looking for someone who’s cared for a disabled dog before.

“We would prefer someone with experience with disabled dogs,” the Humane Society said in a statement. “He will need someone who has the time and ability to maintain him with his disabilities.”

Moreover, the Humane Society shared they’d want an adoptive family who’ll be willing to take in both Shadow and his shelter best friend, a 10-year-old Chihuahua named Tequila. According to the Humane Society, the two “are very bonded and such a comfort to each other.”
