Lately, the internet has been buzzing with pet food recalls from various dog food brands, with the most recent recall being from Viva Dog Food. If you often feed your pup Viva’s fresh and raw dog food, it’s important that you’re aware of the company’s current voluntary recall.
Which Viva dog food products have been recalled in 2024?
The Hillsborough-based company has recalled three dog food products from its duck recipes. These include:
- Viva Duck for Dogs (Ground)
- Viva Duck for Dogs (Chunked)
- Viva Pure Duck (for cats and dogs)
In a statement, the company stated the recalled products fall under Lot 22853. As per the statement, Viva revealed they shipped the last lot on Dec. 6, 2023. They further shared that this last lot was shipped to over 1500 customers.
Viva said they received only one customer complaint out of the 1500 who purchased products from the affected lot. This prompted them to begin an investigation and later issue a voluntary recall.
The company has assured its customers that they are doing all they can to resolve the issue.
“We want to be as open and candid as we can with all of you but there’s a lot of information that we cannot share, and there’s a lot that we are working to understand ourselves,” Viva shared in a statement. “As you can imagine, things happened extremely quickly and we’re doing our best to work through this.”
Why has Viva issued a dog food recall?
Following the customer complaint, a test carried out on samples from the suspected lot revealed possible Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
Both bacteria can cause illness in dogs who eat the contaminated food. The bacteria can also affect people who handle contaminated raw dog food with bare hands. Dogs affected by Salmonella or Listeria exhibit symptoms such as lack of appetite, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal upset, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and fever.
