In a surprise announcement this week, Disney+ shared that it would be moving up the release date of “Ahsoka,” the latest Star Wars spin-off. Set to premiere on August 22, 2023, the show stars Rosario Dawson as title character Ahsoka Tano. The show promises to expand the beloved universe of characters capitalized on by other recent network wins for the media giant. Accordingly, fans will delight in watching cast members from other Star Wars favorites as they appear in the new “Ahsoka” series.
Now, if you’re a subscriber to the streaming service, you can visit a galaxy far, far away from the comfort of your couch. And, while you’re watching the franchise’s latest Jedi Knight take on the dark side, perhaps you’ll be inspired by our list of dog names based on characters in Star Wars “Ahsoka.” What better way to celebrate being part of the show’s fandom than by naming the newest pup you’ve adopted after the most interesting protagonists and villains in the series?
What is Ahsoka about
“Ahsoka” is a series developed by Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni for Disney+. It is a spin-off of “The Mandalorian” and takes place in the same timeframe, serving as a continuation of the animated series “Star Wars Rebels.” This show follows Jedi Ahsoka Tano as she investigates a new threat to the galaxy after the fall of the Empire. (No pressure, right?)
Meet the cast of Ahsoka
As Ahsoka Tano, Rosario Dawson reprises her role as a fan favorite from Season 2 of “The Mandalorian.” Her character also made a cameo in another Disney+ miniseries: “The Book of Boba Fett.” Similarly to Dawson, Lars Mikkelsen will also be reprising a past role for “Ahsoka.” He’ll be appearing on screen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, a character he voiced in the animated series.
In “Ahsoka,” Lucasfilms again offers viewers a show where strong women take the lead as fully-developed characters — whether they appear as heroes or evildoers. As such, fans can embrace Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, and Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati. The Chancellor of the New Republic, portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly, will also make an appearance.
Other featured “Ahsoka” cast members include Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Wes Chatham as Captain Enoch, and the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll. Stevenson — who previously voiced Gar Saxon, a Mandalorian, in “The Clone Wars” — unexpectedly died in May of this year while filming a movie on location in Italy. As such, he will appear posthumously in “Ahsoka.” Last but not least, viewers will see Hayden Christensen — star of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” — as Anakin Skywalker.

May the Force be with you
When it comes to picking a dog name, all we have to say is, “May the Force be with you.” Jokes aside, naming your pup after one of these characters connects you to the show in a deeply personal way. Moreover, it adds an element of playfulness and whimsy to your dog’s identity. And, if your pooch happens to be prone to dramatic episodes, the theatrical origins of their name will only be more fitting!
Whether you choose to name your canine after Ahsoka herself — paying homage to her strength and wisdom — or opt for monikers inspired by other characters or cast members, it can be a delightful way to showcase your love for the series. Plus, it’s a great conversation starter for fellow fans in your Rebel Alliance. So, don’t miss your opportunity to share your enthusiasm for the larger Star Wars universe with others!
As Hera Syndulla says, “Once a rebel, always a rebel.” Walk in your truth, young Jedis, and train your pooch to do the same.
