Mexico has given a rescue dog who died searching for survivors in the recent earthquake in Turkey a hero’s send-off.
The North American country deployed a number of dogs to Turkey to help in rescue efforts, including German Shepherd Proteo.
Tributes Paid With a Hero’s Send-Off
Defense Minister Luis Cresencio Sandoval shared the sad news of the canine’s death at a recent press conference.
“You were always a strong, hard-working dog who never gave up. I will always remember you,” said one rescuer, who worked with Proteo.
The military said on Twitter: “You accomplished your mission… thank you for your heroic work”.
It’s been reported that Proteo died after rubble collapsed on him as he was searching a building for survivors.
Supporters of Turkish soccer club Trabzonspor also unveiled a display dedicated to the rescuers who’ve been helping since the earthquake happened, featuring Proteo.
Vital Canine Assistance
16 dogs arrived from Mexico to help aid in rescue efforts, while dogs from Northern Ireland have also been instrumental in finding survivors. Other countries including the US, South Korea, Switzerland, and El Salvador have sent brave canines too.
The earthquake in Turkey and Syria on Feb. 6 has been devastating. Less than two weeks on, it’s so far the fifth deadliest earthquake of the 21st century, and the fourth-costliest earthquake in history too.
After the initial 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit, another quake of 7.6 magnitude hit a few hours later, adding to the damage.
Across both countries, over 40,000 people have died and over 100,000 have been injured. But it’s a testament to the rescuers – whether human or canine – that these numbers aren’t far higher. One thing’s for certain: Proteo died a true hero.
