Exercising during the winter months can be brutal for both humans and dogs. It can be hard to get up and be active outside when the inside is so cozy. Moreover, joint pain in dogs suffering from degenerative joint disease gets considerably worse in colder weather. There are endless activities to do inside with your pup, but getting in a decent exercise takes a little more forethought.

Whether your dog is a couch potato or a go-getter with a hatred for cold, here are some indoor exercises to do with your pup to ensure that they can still get moving when they don’t want to go outside.

Assemble a Makeshift Play Area

If your dog likes to go to the park to get out their zoomies, give them room to do so in your home. Maybe they have a doggy friend who can come over for a playdate to enjoy the play area with them. Making a play area for your dog can be as simple as temporarily rearranging some furniture or as complex as buying exercise mats for some rough-and-tumble fun. However your make your dog’s play area, be sure to engage with them to initiate play. Some dogs may be confused about the space and need some encouragement to let loose.

Hop on the Treadmill

Getting some steps in on the treadmill is a good way for your dog to boost their heart rate and get their joints moving. If you don’t have a treadmill, there are some great options for under $200 if you are willing to invest in this exercise. This is a good option for dogs with joint pain who may use a treadmill outside of cold months.

Invest in an Agility Kit

For smart, active dogs who usually like to play outside, investing in an indoor/outdoor agility kit can help with satisfying their need to get out pent up energy and use their brain. There are several like this one that come complete with weave poles, tunnels, and a treat pouch.

Benefits of Exercise

It goes without saying that dogs need exercise to be healthy. No matter the age or energy level, getting your pup moving in winter is important. Hopefully these tips provide some inspiration if the exercise needs to be done inside.
