Can Dogs Eat Pickles? Are Pickles Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat pickles? You might be wondering if your dog is begging for a bite, or maybe one fell on the floor and your dog accidentally ate it. Humans can eat pickles, so are pickles safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is it depends, but you should err on the side of caution and not feed your dog pickles. Many pickles are spiced with herbs that can be toxic to dogs, plus the high sodium content could exacerbate already-existing conditions like high blood pressure and weight gain.

Dill and cucumbers are fine for dogs, but most pickles include more than those ingredients. As always, you must ask your vet before sharing any human foods with your dog, including pickles.

Here’s what you should know about why you shouldn’t feed your dog pickles.

Why Are Pickles Bad For Dogs?

With the exception of plain dill pickles, many pickles, like kosher dill pickles and bread and butter pickles, include spices and herbs like garlic, which can be toxic to dogs. Other varieties, like spicy or hot pickles, can also mean trouble for your dog.

Even if the particular spices or pepper used in the pickles aren’t toxic for your dog, chances are their stomachs won’t be used to the spiciness, and your dog could experience gastrointestinal issues.

If you know that the pickles you have contain only cucumber, brine, vinegar, and dill, your dog will be okay if they eat a little bite. Dill helps freshen your pup’s breath, and cucumbers are a low calorie snack.

To be safe, consider feeding your dog cucumbers instead. Just be careful to do so in moderation, as the hydrating, crunchy treat can leave your dog with loose stools.

If your dog accidentally ate a pickle or two, don’t panic. Check what type of pickle your dog ate and contact your veterinarian.

Depending on the amount and type of pickles ingested, your vet might recommend bringing your pup in just to be safe.

If your dog has eaten a large amount of pickles, especially ones you know contain onion, garlic, or other herbs toxic to dogs, contact your local emergency vet or the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661. The helpline may charge you for your call, but if your dog’s life is on the line, it’s worth it.

They can advise you on a course of action, and they may recommend you take your dog to the nearest emergency clinic if your regular vet is unavailable.
