The Importance of Whiskers
We know that cats use their whiskers for balance and sensory perception. While not as long or visible, the whiskers on a dog’s snout, as well as above their eyes, are there for a purpose, too. Whiskers help dogs sense the speed, size, and speed of objects near them. This serves many purposes; detecting threats to the eyes, locating dropped food, and navigating tight spaces. Whiskers help dogs perceive stimuli and to convey emotion.
Whiskers Are Best Left Alone
When grooming a pup, it may seem like the easiest option to simply trim off whiskers when clipping facial hair, instead of leaving them intact. Dogs naturally shed their whiskers, and accidentally pulling or cutting them will not hurt your dog. However, the experience of having their whiskers cut is a confusing one for dogs. It will leave your pup with a lack of sensory perception and can be anxiety-inducing. It’s best to try to leave your pup’s whiskers alone whenever possible.
