Where do long-nosed dog breeds come from?

Historically, dog breeds that have long noses were used for hunting, racing, and digging. Long noses serve a variety of functions. The longer surface area allows for more scents to be trapped in the nasal cavity, making it easier to seek out scents. Long noses are also more aerodynamic, helping breeds that often sprint or hunt get moving faster. And, long noses make great digging tools for breeds that dig into burrows or underground to seek out their prey.

Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound is one of the oldest dog breeds. Originating in Afghanistan, the breed was brought to Europe in the 1800s. They are primarily used as hunting hounds, but also make stylish companions with their long, flowing locks of hair.

Bloodhound

If you’ve ever watched a movie or TV show with police searching for a fugitive, you’ve likely seen a majestic Bloodhound baying away on the hunt. These dogs are known for their exceptional scenting abilities, often used for police work, search and rescue, and canine nosework.

Borzoi

An ancient Russian breed, the Borzoi features a similar look to other sighthounds. This breed was developed in the 1500s and quickly became a breed favored by the royal Tsars. In fact, they were so beloved, only the royal family was allowed to breed, purchase, and gift these dogs!

Collie

The Collie, and its related counterpart the Shetland Sheepdog, is a Scottish breed that was bred to help herd livestock around the Scottish lowlands. These loveable, loyal dogs feature a beautiful thick and full coat, further separated into rough and smooth-coated distinctions.

Dachshund

Fiercely loyal and resilient, the Dachshund is a popular breed that features both a long nose and an even longer body. Their long features also give them a better ability to dig down into burrows after badgers and other prey. It also earned them the affectionate nickname of “Weiner Dog.”

Doberman Pinscher

Often used as guard dogs, the Doberman Pinscher is a loving, sweet, and loyal companion. The breed was created in Germany as a protector and has since gained popularity across the world. And while you may think the Miniature Pinscher is a smaller version, they’re actually both related to the original Standard Pinscher instead!

Italian Greyhound

The perfect pocket-sized companion, Italian Greyhounds are a toy version of the larger Greyhound. They’re an ancient breed, dating back nearly 2,000 years, and have long been favorites of Italian royalty. In addition, their small size made them perfect for keeping vermin at bay inside royal castles.

The Pharaoh Hound has a similar origin to other long-nosed dog breeds used in hunting. These sight-hounds were the favorites of Egyptian pharaohs. They were used to hunt gazelle and other fast-moving prey. As their popularity grew worldwide, they also became beloved companions and are even Malta’s national dog!
