As we approach the fall months, you may be more inclined to add layers to your dog’s coat in the form of sweaters and boots. You may also be inclined to pick out a Halloween costume for your dog. Some pups appear embarrassed to don an outfit while others don’t mind at all. Whichever camp your dog finds themselves in, it begs the question: Do dogs actually like to wear clothes?
The answer isn’t a simple yes or no.
Practical Wear Versus Costumes
There is a difference between dressing your pup in the latest fashions and dressing them for the weather. Some dogs really like costumes. Some really, really don’t. Practical clothing, like booties that protect your pup’s paw pads from icy walkways and jackets that keep warmth close to your doggo’s chest, is a different story.
It doesn’t really matter if your dog likes to wear these clothes. Regardless of their personal feelings, they need the protection. The same, however, can’t be said about a Halloween costume.
When Dogs Need to Wear Clothes
In some cases, dogs need to add a layer, regardless of whether they want to. Obviously, in the fall and winter months, you should keep your dog warm, even if they don’t like the jacket you chose.
Hairless dog breeds, like the Chinese Crested, get cold without proper gear in even slightly chilly weather. While this is somewhat embarrassing for them, it’s important to keep the proper winter wear available for your pup if they fall into this category.

Should You Dress Your Dog in Costumes?
Some research suggests that dogs may be able to feel embarrassment and shyness. If you’ve ever put a silly outfit on your pup and they behaved shyly, they may be doing so out of anxiety because of the unfamiliar situation.
So, will your dog be harmed emotionally if you dress them in a dinosaur outfit for Halloween? Probably not. Still, if they dislike dressing up to the point of fear, you should refrain from subjecting them to costumes and stick with practical, necessary clothing only.
