How Tim Walz’s Labrador Scout’s Heartwarming Backstory Connects to His Son

Tim Walz’s Labrador Retriever has won everyone’s hearts, especially after the beloved pet dog’s story of locking himself in their bedroom has resurfaced on the internet. The pup first became a part of the family in 2019, when the Governor of Minnesota tried to make good on a promise if he were to win the campaign, which he did.

Walz had a promise to uphold with his son, Gus, were he to win his 2019 campaign bid. As the family gathered to celebrate the win, Gus was quick to remind his dad that he was to get a canine companion.

Tim Walz welcomed dog Scout into the family in September 2019, with the Labrador Retriever making his public debut at a press conference. The pup was the family’s first companion animal and was only three months old during the conference at the governor’s residence.

Last year, Scout accidentally locked himself in the bedroom, and the hilarious incident recently resurfaced on the internet. His wife, Gwen Walz, texted him to notify him that there was no key for the room. So, rescuers had to climb in through the window using ladders, per TODAY. Fortunately, Tim Walz’s Labrador Retriever was soon freed from his predicament, with the dog rescue taking about an hour.

Besides Scout, Tim Walz also has another pet, a rescue cat named Honey. The feline was welcomed into the family earlier this year in February. She was about a year and a half old when they brought her home. Honey was adopted from the Animal Humane Society. Tim Walz mentioned in a video that the beloved pet drew them in with her honey-colored eyes, which is also the inspiration behind her name.

Before Honey became a part of the family, he had another rescue cat named Afton. The kitty has been missing since August 2023. Tim Walz’s missing pet is a beautiful male orange tabby. The family hasn’t lost hope and would be happy if the feline finds his way back home.
