Will Smith confirms trying to adopt ‘I Am Legend’ dog Abbey, praises her acting skills
Will Smith recently appeared in an episode of “Hot Ones,” discussing the much-loved “I Am Legend” dog, Abbey. It is well-known that the actor absolutely loved his canine co-star, but in the latest episode of “Hot Ones,” he confirmed that he even tried to adopt her and bring the German Shepherd home with him.
The “Men in Black” star previously posted a moving tribute to Abbey on Instagram on the occasion of National Pet Day. The video, a compilation of clips from the movie and behind-the-scenes footage, showed Will Smith still remembering his dog co-star more than a decade after the movie’s release.
In the “Hot Ones” episode, he talked about how impressed he was with the German Shepherd, so much so that he tried to adopt her. The actor exclaimed, “It was like Abbey spoke English.” Reminiscing about the heart-wrenching scene from “I Am Legend” when he had to choke an injured Sam, he stated, “Abbey’s doing that…How do you train a dog to go limp?”
Unfortunately, Abbey was her family’s sole “breadwinner” and couldn’t be adopted to be a family dog. Will Smith noted that working with Abbey was similar to working with “brilliant actresses.”
Along with Abbey, German Shepherd Kona also played Sam for some scenes in “I Am Legend.” However, Abbey’s bonding with Will Smith stole everyone’s hearts, which led to the dog actor’s stardom. Moreover, the canine’s role is touching, as she stays by his side throughout Smith’s character’s journey through the post-apocalyptic world.
