An abandoned dog was rescued moments before being put down in Wirral, United Kingdom. Pocket Bully Pumpkin was scheduled to be euthanized. However, luckily, the vet couldn’t find a vein, so he was given a second chance at life.

According to BBC, Dr. Sharon Williams was contacted to ask if she could save Pumpkin. However, when the Celandine Wood Animal Rescue vet reached out, they told her he had already been sedated and was about to be put down. Williams was occupied when she first received the message to help save the Pocket Bully. However, she didn’t expect the abandoned dog to be taken for being put down by the time she called them back.

The abandoned dog was lucky, as the vet got a second call soon after asking if she was still willing to rescue him. Pumpkin’s attending vet couldn’t find a vein to give him the final sedation. Williams immediately drove to where they kept the American Bully and Patterdale Terrier mix. Moreover, while the dog was emaciated and lethargic, he managed to wag his tail upon seeing his rescuer.

Pumpkin was originally abandoned by his owner, who left him tied to the gate of a dog pound. After the kennel took him in, he kept losing weight. He reached half his original weight within a few months, which led to the staff believing he had cancer. The abandoned dog was booked in for euthanasia for that very reason, as the kennel couldn’t afford the treatment costs.

While he was originally named George, Williams went with Pumpkin as he was wearing a pumpkin jumper when she first met him. After several blood tests and ultrasound scans, it was determined that the Pocket Bully had food allergies instead of cancer. He was administered a hypoallergenic diet and, fortunately, started putting on weight again.

Furthermore, Pumpkin has already found his forever home. After reaching an ideal weight, he started showing his personality and was taken home by a dog walker.
