San Francisco firefighters rescue dog chased off cliff by raccoons

The Memorial Day weekend didn’t go very swimmingly for a San Francisco pup. On Sunday, May 26, the San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) received a report of a pup falling off a 70-foot cliff. The dog named Cushy-Pup was chased by raccoons in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. Cushy-Pup fell off the steep hill on Turner Terrace, and the firefighters had to resort to rope rescue to save them.

The canine was first reported to be injured. However, the SFFD personnel later clarified in a post on X — formerly known as Twitter — that Cushy-Pup was not wounded. The firefighters had to use flashlights to safely get the pup out of the tall grass. One of the first responders wearing a harness was lowered onto the section where they spotted the dog to carry them back to safety.

The dog was then freed from their predicament and happily reunited with their owner. According to Fox News, about a dozen firefighters were at the rescue scene.

Fortunately, Cushy-Pup was rescued thanks to the firefighters’ quick thinking. However, it is important to note that raccoons pose a threat to your beloved pet. This is true even if one lives in an urban environment. Raccoons can spread diseases, especially rabies. So, pet parents must be wary of them and ensure their furry friends stay safe.

Food left out for your furry companion and garbage cans left open are the leading reasons raccoons might pay your house a visit. So, try to feed your pet indoors or bring their dishes back inside after their feeding time. Securing your garbage cans will also help keep the raccoons away.
