Makeshift Shelter Helps Rescue Hundreds of Dogs From Flood

A makeshift dog shelter has been saving the lives of many canines in Canoas, Brazil. Hundreds of volunteers have come together to rescue pups in need in the city. Transforming a roofless warehouse that had long been abandoned, the makeshift shelter treats and feeds all dogs affected by the severe flooding.

Makeshift shelter saves hundreds of dogs from severe flooding in Brazil

Several kind samaritans have come together in Canoas to build a makeshift dog shelter for canines amidst the floods. Per AP News, the shelter sees about 20 to 30 dogs brought in every hour. The pups are often injured or have been saved from drowning, so the shelter helps them recuperate. The animals are sent to the vet if needed, while others are treated in the facility.

Many of these canines have been rendered homeless due to the severe flooding. Thus, the volunteers provide them with food and water until they reunite with their owners. Moreover, heavy rains are forecasted for the upcoming weekend, so they are working extra hard to ensure the dogs are well cared for.

While there is a tally for people, there isn’t one keeping note of the animals affected by the floods in Brazil. Many canines died due to the flooding, often drowning before the makeshift dog shelter can get to them. Several dogs brought in are too injured or weak to be transported to the hospital, leading to the volunteers caring for them in the facility.

Gabriel Cardoso da Silva is one of the organizers of the makeshift dog shelter. While coming to the city to help rescue people, he saw pups barking for help. Having dogs of his own, he felt spurred to do something. The social media campaign soon started drawing attention, with others joining up with him and his wife. They now have about 200 volunteers doing their best to save as many dogs as possible from the Brazil floods.
