A heartwarming conclusion to Valentine’s Week came when, after over 1,000 days in a North Carolina shelter, two “canine lovebirds” found a new home together. The shelter announced on Feb. 18 that the dogs now have a devoted mom and dad in their permanent home.

Romeo and Juliet, ‘canine lovebirds,’ find forever home after 3 years in North Carolina shelter

After residing in a shelter for over 1,000 days, two “canine lovebirds” finally found a new home together, as The Charlotte Observer reports. The Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society in North Carolina shared the heartwarming story on Facebook, bringing the “most perfect” conclusion to Valentine’s week. In the Feb. 18 Facebook post, the shelter joyfully announced that the dogs, “Romeo & Juliet,” are living with their new mom and dad, who adore them.

These dogs were found as strays and were rescued three years ago in December 2020, staying in the shelter until their recent adoption. Romeo is a Bluetick Coonhound mix, and Juliet is a Redbone Coonhound mix.

Initially, the humane society attempted to separate them since it was difficult to find a home for two dogs.

A shelter spokesperson stated, “Juliet was fine. She was really more into human affection and didn’t seem too bothered by not being with Romeo. He, on the other hand, completely shut down without her. We knew pretty quickly that in order for him to have any quality of life, he would need to stay with her.”

The dogs became some of the shelter’s longest-standing residents and became famous for their deep affection for each other. So the shelter held onto hope that Romeo and Juliet would continue to adore each other.

Moreover, in June, the shelter emphasized on Facebook that “Romeo and Juliet must be adopted together” as they deserve a forever home that has room for both.

Eventually, a shelter volunteer and her husband became the new owners of these dogs. Hence, they will continue on their next chapter in life with a familiar individual.
