Dog Shot in Face Undergoes Jaw Surgery, Blood Transfusions

After experiencing a setback in her recovery, Atley, a dog who was shot in the face, required readmission to the hospital on Wednesday night. The Shawano County Humane Society disclosed her readmission to the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital via a Facebook update. They noted that her medical care is ongoing as they continue to monitor her health.

Dog found with gunshots in face suffers from broken jaw, undergoes surgery

Originally, Atley’s story garnered attention following a successful surgery after she was discovered injured and abandoned in Shawano County. The young Black and Tan Coonhound‘s plight became known after she was found shot in the face and left on a roadside. With little initially known about the circumstances leading to her condition, Atley has since been under the care of the Shawano County Humane Society and the medical team at Blue Pearl Animal Hospital in Appleton. Following surgery, she was expected to remain in the hospital for a short period. However, a full recovery might take several months, according to the animal shelter.

The local sheriff’s office has launched an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, community efforts have rallied to support Atley’s healing journey. The discovery of her injuries, including a broken jaw and the need for multiple blood transfusions, prompted urgent surgical intervention. As her story spreads, donations have poured in from across Wisconsin and beyond to assist with the escalating medical expenses. These costs are anticipated to reach several thousand dollars.

Sarah Megee, the Animal Care Manager, remarked on the outpouring of kindness that Atley’s situation has inspired — per WBAY News. “I guess what you said with the worst of humanity, this has brought out the best in humanity of everyone that is contacting us,” said Megee.

For those wishing to contribute to Atley’s care, the Humane Society has provided donation options. The organization hopes to transition Atley to a foster home in the future.
