When was the last Wellness dog food recall?
Since the inception of Wellness in 1997, there have been numerous recalls of their dog food. The most recent recall of Wellness dog food occurred in 2017.
Since then, the dog food brand has faced no recalls. In fact, their parent company, WellPet, became one of the biggest pet food companies in the world.
Why did Wellness recall its dog food?
In March 2017, specific batches of Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs, available in 13.2 oz. cans were recalled. The reason behind this recall was the potentially high levels of beef thyroid hormone.
According to WellPet, elevated levels of this hormone may impact a dog’s metabolism, leading to a rise in urinary output, increased thirst, weight loss, and restlessness.
The recalled products consisted of:
- Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs
- Size: 13.2-ounce cans
- Best-By Dates: February 2, 2019, August 29, 2019 and August 30, 2019
Research suggests that symptoms associated with elevated thyroid hormone levels in pets are typically reversible once the consumption of the implicated product ceases. Since the recipe was designed as a mixer or topper for intermittent or supplemental feeding, the likelihood of impacting a dog negatively was minimal.
WellPet did not receive any reports of health issues stemming from the consumption of the affected product. Nevertheless, as an additional precautionary measure, the company voluntarily recalled three best-by dates.
In February 2017, the company also faced recalls of their cat food. They voluntarily recalled several canned cat food products due to the potential presence of foreign material.
