A Utah dog blinded by a porcupine is now eligible for adoption. Thanks to generous donations from the community, he has recovered and is looking for his forever home.

Dog attacked by porcupine suffers eye injury

Tiffany Henline, an experienced dog foster mom with Community Animal Welfare Society in Vernal, found Willy in a remote part of Eastern Utah. According to KSL News, Willy “might have been in the worst condition she has ever seen.”

Willy was starving, dehydrated, and had something wrong with his eyes. Henline, who has fostered hundreds of dogs, immediately recognized how dire the situation was.

“When I first met him, I thought, ‘Oh, I hope this dog doesn’t die tonight. I don’t know if he’s going to survive,'” she said. “He had one eye that was very swollen, protruding out the front of his face, and the other was very recessed.”

When Henline noticed quills in his body, she realized Willy must have had a fight with a porcupine.

“There were porcupine quills all the way to the back through both eyes,” Henline said.

She transported the pup to a clinic in West Jordan. Veterinarians treated Willy, ultimately removing both of his eyes.

Injured rescue dog now eligible for adoption

CAW shared Willy’s story on Facebook, and it resonated with the rescue’s followers. They donated $3,000 to help pay for the medical treatment.

The blind canine is now back with Henline and doing well.

“It is just miraculous, but really, he’s going to be OK,” she said.

According to Henline, Willy Is “an incredible power napper.” He also seems to be an optimist, as evidenced by his constantly wagging tail.

“That is how we know he is happy,” she said. “He’s a good boy.”
