It’s an unfortunate fact that animal cruelty comes in many forms. One of the more obscene versions is sexual exploitation. The latest alleged perpetrator of this heinous crime is a Penn State professor. According to the New York Post, he’s accused of “sexual acts with his dog in sickening displays that were captured on a state forest trail camera.”

Authorities charge Penn State professor with animal cruelty for dog abuse

The professor in question is 64-year-old Themis Matsoukas. The incident occurred in the bathrooms near Rothrock State Forest in Pennsylvania. Matsoukas was reportedly caught on camera naked from the waist down, save for socks and shoes, performing sex acts on his Collie. This isn’t the first time Matsoukas has gotten in trouble with the law. He has been allegedly engaging in lewd acts in the area since 2014.

Authorities identified the professor due to his North Face backpack, which was present during other incidents. Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources searched the educator’s home. There, they found the backpack as well as a ski mask from a previous incident. Matsoukas apparently panicked, telling the rangers, “I do it to blow off steam.”

Authorities charged Matsoukas with “open lewdness, indecent exposure, and sexual intercourse with an animal, misdemeanors, and summary charges of cruelty to animals and disorderly conduct,” according to the New York Post. Matsoukas’ attorney, Matthew McClenahen, said it would “inappropriate” to comment on the charges at this time.

The Penn State professor started at the university in 1991 and received multiple teaching awards. He is now on leave.

What to do if you suspect animal abuse

If you suspect a dog is the victim of animal cruelty, it is crucial to take immediate action. Even if you are unsure, it’s better to report it and be wrong than to fail to protect defenseless dogs.

Start by documenting any evidence of abuse, with photographs or videos if possible, without putting yourself or the dog in danger. Then, report your concerns to your local animal control agency or law enforcement. Provide them with the gathered evidence and any relevant details. Finally, ensure the safety and well-being of the dog by providing temporary shelter if possible. Also, consider reaching out to local animal welfare organizations for assistance if necessary.
