Police say a Nashville woman was killed in a fatal hit-and-run earlier this week. The tragic accident leaves a black and white dog named Patch without a family.
Dog Walks Home After Fatal Hit-And-Run
NBC affiliate WSMV reports the woman was killed when a pickup truck struck her while she walked her dog. A pickup truck struck the woman around 6:30 am. A passerby later discovered the woman and called for help. Emergency medical services transported the victim to TriStar Skyline Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center in Nashville. Tragically, the woman died from her injuries.
A neighbor discovered the uninjured pup sitting at the front door of the apartment. Authorities believe the pup walked home on his own after the incident. Police transported the dog to Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control. The shelter hopes to reunite the dog with the woman’s family following the fatal hit-and-run.
“We’re giving him lots of love and care,” Matt Peters, a spokesperson for the Metro Public Health Department, said.
Shelter Hopes to Reunite Dog With Victim’s Family
If the woman’s family does not claim Patch within a week, the dog will be connected with a rescue organization.
“We have had a few rescue groups reach out about him already,” Peters tells reporters. “It does appear he might have had a life as a service dog, in which case a rescue that works with service animals could be a good match for him.” Peters says many people are interested in adopting the gentle dog.
“It’s obvious this was a traumatic experience for him,” Peters said. “We’re trying to give him as much time and space to decompress as we can.”
At this time, authorities continue to search for the person responsible for the incident. Detectives believe a Ford F-150 is the vehicle that killed the woman.
