How to Get Rid of Fleas in the Carpet the Natural Way

Fleas are tiny insect parasites that live off of their host’s blood. They can cause discomfort to the host, and are notoriously difficult to eradicate once they have become established. For example, a cleaned pet can become infested with fleas again if the pet comes in contact with carpet in which the fleas are hiding. To avoid causing harm through the use of toxic chemicals and medicines, you can try to get rid of fleas in your carpet the “natural” way.

Step 1

Vacuum the carpet, focusing on areas in which your pet often lies down or rests. Also focus on dark areas that fleas might flee to, such as under furniture. Dispose of the vacuum bag immediately, as the fleas in the bag may escape. Place the bag in a sealed plastic bag and throw it away or burn it.

Step 2

Sprinkle diatomaceous earth on the carpet. Diatomaceous earth can be found at most health food stores, and is a natural insecticide made up of the powdered remains of fossilized diatoms.

Step 3

Cut up one lemon and boil it in a pint of water. Allow the solution to cool and pour into a spray bottle. Spray the carpet. You may also wish to spray your dog or cat. The natural oils and citrus scent naturally deters fleas.

Step 4

Add several drops of citronella and rosemary essential oils to a spray bottle filled with eight ounces of filtered water. Both of these herbs are natural pest repellents. Spray the carpet and any living areas with the mixture. You may find that this solution also freshens the air.
