Help, My Dog Got Sprayed By A Skunk: The Best Skunk Rinse Recipe

“Help! My dog got sprayed by a skunk!”

Well, you’re in luck, because we have the absolute best recipe for what to do if your dog has an unfortunate encounter with one of our little black and white animal friends from the wild.

Skunk spray attacks are pretty common and it’s important to know what to do when it happens to you.

First of all it’s best to avoid the spray altogether, and the best way to do that is for a vigilant pet parent to always be near their pup when they are outside. That way you’ll know if danger is near and you can take appropriate action before the spray attack occurs.

Once the spray happens, you’ll need to think and act fast. The sooner you can apply the solution, the sooner you can help your pet get some relief and help to prevent the skunk spray from getting on you or your furniture or spread around as your dog tries desperately to rub the smell off onto whatever is nearby.

People have all sorts of recipes to help our pups when they get sprayed by a skunk. I’ve heard everything from a two liter bottle of coke tomato juice to special mixtures you buy online or in stores, but the best way to help your dog when they’ve been sprayed by a skunk is with a combination of products that are most likely in your kitchen or home right now.

Very important: Don’t get your pet wet first! Pour the solution directly onto your dog’s fur, but don’t get it into your dog’s eyes because it will burn.

Mix the following ingredients:

1 quart hydrogen peroxide (the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide variety)

1/4 cup baking soda

2 teaspoons dish-washing liquid or soap

When you’re done, be sure to rinse your dog thoroughly.

You need to make the solution fresh, right before you apply it to your pet, otherwise it won’t be effective and could explode over time.

If you have a large breed dog, you may need to double, triple or even quadruple the mixture.
