Finding a new vet

Question:

I just moved across the country and need to find a new vet. What questions should I be asking potential DVMs and how should I make my decision?

Answer:

To find a new veterinarian, first ask friends and neighbors who they recommend. Recommendations from existing clients is very valuable. You may also wish to check if the hospital has any special certifications, such as American Animal Hospital Association – these simply mean they adhere to certain standards.

Next, be sure they offer services you need, such as boarding, grooming, and surgical services. Other important points may be location and hours of operation. Your veterinarian should provide emergency service as well – either referral to an emergency clinic when closed or on-call veterinarians.

Finally, visit the practice. Be sure you are happy with the atmosphere and the staff, and ask for a tour. Finding a new veterinarian is a important as a new family physician–after all, your veterinarian is your “other” family doctor!
