As the leaves change colors and morning temps drop, the runners among us recognize the start of a classic autumn tradition: race season. Marathons, triathlons, and that all-time favorite: the 5K. All summer, people have been lacing up their sneakers and training for first place. For many, going on a run is a great time to take their dogs out as well. But why stop there? Now, it’s common to see dogs on the racecourse. Running with your dog just got a lot more fun.

Fun Runs

Last Friday, KY3 reported on a special race in Springfield, Missouri, created especially for dog parents. That weekend, the Eighth Annual Fast and Furriest 5K saw dogs of all sizes partaking in one-mile races, 5Ks, and fun walks. With the mild fall weather, the dogs and their parents must’ve had a wonderful morning. More importantly, the event’s proceeds benefited Rescue One—a nonprofit rescue group based in Missouri.

Nearby in Tulsa, Oklahoma, another run took place in the city’s Mohawk Park. Parkside’s By Your Side 5K and one-mile run featured dozens of people and plenty of dogs among them. Notably, the event was also a charity run, raising funds for Parkside’s Patient Assistance program, which provides essential services to the community, according to News 9.

For everyone showing up to support the runners, the run also featured a costume contest, informational booths, and even a cutest dog contest.

Running With Your Dog

If you’re thinking about taking the dog out on your next run, the good news is that’s a great idea! Just like humans, aerobic exercise is important for your dog’s health. Before you hit the road, though, there are a few things to keep in mind.

Firstly, all dogs may go to heaven, but not all dogs are built to run long distances. Certain breeds are better suited for running, and taking your dog’s age and health into account is imperative.

All that aside, though, running with your dog can be a great way to exercise and spend time together. If you’re not sure where to start, we have some tips to get you started right here.
