Can Dogs Eat Bratwurst? Is Bratwurst Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat bratwurst? Maybe you’ve thought about sharing a bite with your pooch while throwing a bunch of these German sausages onto the grill. If humans can eat bratwurst, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t eat bratwurst safely. The main problem with bratwurst is that it is a food that’s high in salt and high in fat. Additionally, bratwurst usually contains spices that could be harmful to your dog.

So as much as your canine might love the idea of sneaking off with a bratwurst that’s fresh off the grill, it’s best to keep them well away from the sausages.

If your dog manages to eat a lot of bratwurst, you should call your veterinarian for advice. Here’s what you need to know about bratwurst and dogs.

Why Is Bratwurst Bad For Dogs?

The high salt and fat content of bratwurst are the main reasons why they are not a suitable food for dogs. Consuming too much sodium can increase the chances of your dog developing high blood pressure and heart disease.

Additionally, there’s also a chance that eating too many bratwurst could bring on salt poisoning.

When it comes to high fat foods, eating too many of them can result in canine obesity, which can in turn bring on a range of additional medical problems. Dogs who consume high fat diets are also at more risk of developing pancreatitis.

Beyond the salt and fat content of bratwurst, the sausages are also often made with ingredients, like garlic and onion powder, which could also prove to be toxic and harmful to your dog.

Sneaking in a small bite of some bratwurst will likely not harm your dog. Just take the rest of the sausage away, and keep an eye out for symptoms of salt poisoning such as vomiting, diarrhea, and drinking a lot more water than usual.

If you notice that your dog has consumed a more substantial amount of bratwurst, it’s best to consult with your vet. They will be able to advise you whether your dog might need to seek out medical care or whether you can take steps to allow them to recover at home.
