Can Dogs Eat Swordfish? Is Swordfish Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat swordfish? Maybe you’ve thought about sharing some with your pooch while preparing swordfish as part of a hearty weekend meal. If humans can eat swordfish, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t safely eat swordfish. While swordfish might not be technically toxic for dogs, large fish such as swordfish and tuna are likely to have higher levels of mercury in them, which can lead to a number of health issues for your dog.

So with other readily available fish like cod, whitefish and herring available, it’s safest to pass on swordfish for your dog.

You must always contact your vet before introducing any new foods to your dog, including fish. Here’s what you need to know about swordfish and dogs.

Why Is Swordfish Bad For Dogs?

Fish in general isn’t considered to be toxic to dogs. But large fish like swordfish and tuna tend to accumulate more mercury and other heavy metals in them due to their longer lifespan.

These metals can have a negative health impact on your dog and, in some cases, could even prove to be fatal in the long term.

In general, fish can be a great source of protein for your dog and also provides a lot of beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids, but it’s safest to stick to smaller fish like herring, sardines, and whitefish if you’re looking to add fish to your dog’s regular diet.

Thankfully, a small amount of swordfish is unlikely to cause your dog any lasting damage. So if you notice that your dog has sneaked in a bite of swordfish, simply remove the rest of the fish and pay attention to your dog.

Look out for any immediate symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach pain. If you notice such symptoms, it’s safest to call your veterinarian and follow their advice.

If you discover that your dog has consumed a large amount of swordfish, it’s best to consult with your veterinarian. They will advise you on any medical help or tests that might need to be carried out to ensure your dog’s safety.
