Can Dogs Eat Jerky? Is Jerky Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat jerky? You may be asking this because you want to let your pup have a taste of your jerky snack, or maybe your dog already got into a bag of jerky and you want to make sure they’re okay. Humans can eat jerky, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

There is no short yes or no answer as to whether dogs can eat jerky. Jerky as it comes from a grocery store is not the best for your dog’s tummy. However, you can make jerky that is safe for your pup’s consumption.

If your dog has eaten jerky, they most likely will only suffer from an upset stomach. However, you should still contact your veterinarian if you suspect your pup ate store bought jerky. Here’s what you should know about feeding jerky to dogs.

When Is Jerky Good For Dogs To Eat?

Jerky can be bought or made for dogs. In its simplest form, which is plain, dried meat, jerky is perfectly safe for pups and can be a good source of protein.

A lot of dog treats that bear similarities to your jerky snacks are dried beef, turkey, or duck. What makes these different from jerky made for humans is the lack of salt and spices. Once these are added, the jerky is no longer good for your doggo.

You may be familiar with a 2014 incident in which over 1,000 dogs died as a result of eating contaminated jerky treats. Several dog treat companies pulled their jerky from shells as a result.

This incident is a good reminder that making treats for your pup using organic ingredients, although time consuming, is always the best way to go.

Jerky is bad for dogs when it contains salt and spices, which is how all jerky made for humans is prepared.

If your dog had a little piece of salty, spicy jerky, they will most likely not have a negative reaction. If your dog has digestive issues or is generally not in good health, a little piece of jerky may cause stomach upset or other side effects.

Moreover, some spices that are common in jerky, like onion and garlic powder, are toxic for dogs. As previously stated, you should contact your veterinarian if you suspect your dog has eaten jerky with salt and spices.
