Deafness in Dogs: Symptoms, Causes, & Treatments

Deafness in dogs is a condition that happens when a dog cannot hear. The condition can result in a total or partial loss of hearing.

In some cases, a dog is born with the condition.

Unfortunately, certain dog breeds are most predisposed to the condition than others. For example, some of those breeds include Dalmatians, Boston Terriers, and German Shepherds.

Additionally, older dogs are more likely to develop the condition than younger pups.

If you see the signs of deafness in your dog, then get to a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Here’s what you should know about the symptoms, causes, and treatments for the condition.

Symptoms of Deafness in Dogs

The condition prevents a dog from being able to hear properly. For example, some of the common symptoms can include:

  • Not reacting to loud noises
  • Failing to respond to their name
  • Not reacting to toys that make noise
  • Not being affected by everyday noises

Causes of Deafness in Dogs

The cause of the condition can be a number of things. For example, some of the common causes include:

  • Ear infections
  • The aging process
  • Cognitive issues
  • Tumors
  • Certain medicines (including antibiotics)
  • Metals (including mercury and lead)
  • Nerve issues
  • Hypothyroidism

Unfortunately, some dog breeds at more predisposed to this condition than others. Some of those breeds include:

  • Miniature Poodle
  • Maltese
  • German Shepherd
  • Cocker Spaniel
  • Jack Russell Terrier
  • Boston Terrier
  • Dalmatian

Additionally, some dogs are born with the condition. This is called congenital deafness.

Treatments for Deafness in Dogs

Firstly, your vet will ask about your dog’s symptoms. Secondly, your vet will ask about your dog’s full medical history. This will include any breed-specific problems.

Thirdly, a full physical examination will be carried out. Special attention will be paid to the ears. Additionally, hearing tests and an examination of the ear canal will be carried out.

Treatment depends on the underlying condition. Unfortunately, there is no current cure for a dog born with the condition.

However, in the case of an infection causing the issue, the infection can be treated with medication. As always, if your vet prescribes your dog any medicine, make sure to stick to the correct dose and frequency instructions. Also, complete the full course of medicine.

Generally, a dog that suffers from the condition will need to have their home environment changed so that it is safe for them. Your vet can help provide advice on this.
