‘Fromm Family Foods’ Issues A Voluntary Nationwide Recall Of Canned Dog Food

According to a notice posted by the the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Fromm Family Foods is recalling approximately 5,500 cases of Fromm Shredded dog food due to elevated levels of Vitamin D.

There have been “no reports of illness or injury” by consumers at the time of this writing. However, the company reportedly discovered the potential harmful issue during testing.

“Dogs ingesting elevated levels of Vitamin D may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss,” the notice reads.

“Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Consumers who have dogs that have consumed any of the affected products and are exhibiting these symptoms should contact their veterinarian.”

At the time of this writing, there is no official statement from Fromm Family Foods about the recall on their company website nor their social media accounts.

According to their website, the company is a “a fifth-generation family-owned-and-operated pet food company based in Wisconsin” established in 1904.

“Compliance to federal, state and local regulations is of the utmost importance. To ensure this compliance we perform audits of our procedures, programs and documentation on a regular basis,” they write about their inspections products.

“We are also subjected to random and periodic inspections performed by outside agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).”

The FDA states that this is a voluntary recall and urges those “who have purchased Fromm Four-Star Shredded Entrée canned dog food” to “return the product to your retailer.”
