Save A Dog: Woman Reunites With Her Dog At A Shelter After He Was Missing For Two Years

Aisha Nieves, of Allentown, Pennsylvania, was head over heels for her Pit Bull-Rottweiler mix, Kovu. “That was my baby. He would go with me everywhere. He would sleep in my bed,” she told WFMZ. But that all changed in 2019, when a car struck the fence outside her home while she was at work. When she came home, she couldn’t find Kovu anywhere.

Her frantic search led her to the Lehigh County Humane Society (LCHS), where shelter workers informed her that someone had adopted and renamed Kovu. “I showed them a picture, and they’re like, ‘Oh, that’s Ash. He was just adopted not that long ago,'” Nieves revealed.

Nieves never forgot about Kovu, and two years later, she was scrolling through the LCHS once again. And who did she see? Kovu! “He had a scar right over his right eye,” she said. “It’s not that noticeable anymore, but in the picture they had, you could see it.”

‘Their Reunion Was Undeniable And Heartwarming’

Nieves then rushed to the LCHS and worried Kovu might not recognize her after their two-year-long separation. Those worries were quieted immediately. “We locked eyes, and I seen his smile, and he started wagging his tail,” she said. “Soon as he started coming, he started squealing and screaming and yelling and jumping on me kissing.”

As you can see in the video at the top of this article, this might just take the top spot as the best reunion of the year. Take that, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez!

LCHS community engagement manager Julie Huber told CNN that, “after submitting proof of ownership,” there was no doubt that the stray dog they named “Ash was, in fact, Kovu.” She added, “Their reunion was undeniable and heartwarming to all who were there… It was a moment that gave you all the loving chills.”

We at DogTime encourage all dog parents to tag, license, and microchip their pets for instances like this. Many more lost pets return to their families quickly when they have proper identification.

Have you ever reunited with a beloved dog? Did they react like Kovu did in the video? Then tell us your story in the comments below!
