‘Doggy Bodega’ Opens in New York City

Don’t call it a pet food store. A new boutique “doggy bodega” and kitchen store has just opened in New York City’s Upper West Side.

Serving the Canine Community

Unofficially, Just Food for Dogs has been open since June. However, the space’s eatery just began slinging bowls two weeks ago. Along Broadway, and just steps from the Lincoln Center, the shop offers “human quality” fare made by professional chefs.

The company’s website says the idea for the business came from founder Shawn Buckley’s personal experience with Big Dog Food. According to Buckley, when he discovered what was “legally” allowed in dog food, he was so shocked he instantly started cooking for his own dog, Simon, going forward.

Not surprisingly, the company’s focus is on nutrient-dense foods with whole ingredients. Furthermore, Just Food advocates protecting pet health and supports rescue shelters around the nation. One of Just Food’s main philosophies is relying on science to drive its products. So far, the company is the only one of its kind to submit to a digestibility study with a university. Even more amazing, Just Food also conducts regular tasting trials with all their products.

What’s On the Menu?

So far, the company has 40 retail locations. However, this is their first store in the Big Apple. Just looking at their online options, the meals seem satiating, with large chunks of recognizable foods. As for the New York brick-and-mortar, the menu is anchored with the company’s staples, cooked fresh. According to Patch, customers can choose among options like tofu and quinoa with sweet potatoes, kale, and blueberries, beef and russet potato with carrots, green peas, and more. Timeout says the concept “[is] basically a Michelin-starred outing for dogs.”

Hopefully, the doggy bodega idea is a hit and we will see more dog-centric food concepts. Until then, anyone can get a taste of Just Food’s delicious meals online.
