Ethan Almighty has had an eventful 12 months.

In January 2021, somebody left him for dead outside the Kentucky Humane Society. But while starving and barely breathing, he was able to pull through and get back to good health. And, eventually, find a forever home.

“I think he came along at a time during COVID when there was such bad news going on … and each day … he kept getting a little better,” said dog dad Jeff Callaway, per WTKR, “And people connect with him.”

Honoring Ethan Almighty

As a result, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has declared January to be “Ethan Almighty Animal Shelter Awareness Month”. By doing so, the Bluegrass State can honor Ethan while also highlighting the very many more animals in shelters who are looking for their own forever homes.

“We need your help to bring attention to so many other shelter animals who deserve a second chance,” said Alisa Gray, President of the Kentucky Humane Society.

Ethan’s certainly very popular in the state. He’s already been awarded “Shelter Dog of the Year” and the “American Humane’s Hero Dog Award”, but ultimately seems unfazed by the attention.

A Busy Forever Home

Ethan’s dog parents did a DNA test on the Kentucky rescue canine, and it turns out he’s a Presa Canario. A large canine, the Presa Canario originates in the Canary Islands. These dogs traditionally work as herding or guard dogs.

They officially adopted Ethan on Mar. 10, 2021, after he spent a few weeks recovering under the care of veterinarians. He has a number of animal siblings, including Great Danes, cats, and a rabbit.

And he’s certainly had an impact on people. “He inspires them and gives them hope and courage and gives them the will to keep fighting whatever battle they are fighting in their life,” said Callaway.
