A Dire Warning – Puppy Dies After Eating Rat Poison

It’s no secret that puppies love to eat anything they can.

Puppy proofing is hard work, and if anything hazardous is missed, you’re at risk of injuring a curious dog. Often, the best way to deter bad behavior is lots of exercise. Puppies love to run and play, so outdoor time is a necessity. But as one dog parent sadly learned, sometimes the world isn’t so friendly to our beloved companions.

An Innocent, but Tragic, Mistake

Cali, a 7-month-old Rottweiler puppy, was well-loved in her neighborhood. Cali, residing in a neighborhood in Manhattan, was friendly to everyone she met. But on a routine walk with her dog parent, Ralph Edwards, Cali ate something she shouldn’t have – rat poison. Rodent poison is frequently left in unprotected areas outdoors despite its hazardous nature to pets and small children. Cali was rushed to the vet, but after struggling for several days, was unfortunately euthanized.

“I did what I could to save her. Obviously, money didn’t save her,” said Edwards. “Maybe it’s just someone trying to get rid of the rodents, and is doing about it the wrong way … I don’t think someone is maliciously doing it — you know, throwing it out like it’s salt for snow.”

Of course, Cali’s grieving family is not to blame – but it’s unlikely the person who put out the rat poison meant any harm to dogs.

Protecting Your Dog From Poisoning

It’s important to remember that pet poisoning can happen accidentally even in the most secure households. Keep the number for the Animal Poison Control hotline on hand for assistance.

Time is of the essence – even if you’re unsure that your dog has been poisoned, seek veterinary attention. If your pup loves picking up random items on walks, consider a muzzle to prevent them from ingesting any foreign objects. And if you struggle with rodents – don’t let rodent poison ever be accessible to pets or children.
