An abandoned Pit Bull mix from Oklahoma City is settling into his forever home – with the person who rescued him from a sealed doghouse.

Oklahoma Dog Abandoned in Sealed Doghouse

Diego is a pup who was found abandoned in a doghouse near the Oklahoma River in late December. What made this doghouse different, however, was that its front door was boarded up, making escape impossible for the canine.

Luckily, a woman named Feleciana Ramirez found the doghouse. When she realized it was nailed shut, she mobilized to get it open and find out what was inside.

“I had a utility ax, and I broke it open, peeked in it, and saw that he was in there,” Ramirez told News9 about the unusual discovery and ultimate rescue of the abandoned Pit Bull mix. “I was surprised to find anything alive because he wasn’t whimpering. He wasn’t making any kind of noise.”

Once she freed the dog, Diego was transported to OKC Animal Welfare. He stayed at the shelter briefly before being transferred to Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society, which had more resources to care for him.

In a Facebook post about the pup, Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society shared that Diego “was dumped near the river with no food or water for an unknown amount of time, just left to die. Luckily, he was found and rescued. There were scratch marks on the entrance from where he desperately tried to escape.

His body is covered in scars and wounds. He is emaciated. He has suffered physically and emotionally, likely far longer than just his time in that box.”

The Facebook post detailing Diego’s ordeal garnered plenty of crying and angry emojis, as well as donations totaling $605 (as of this writing).

Nursed Back to Health

Foster mom Kayla Wise, who has cared for other dogs from Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society, brought Diego home and facilitated his recovery. With her loving care, the “gentle” and “sweet” canine healed from his injuries and gained 20 pounds.

After many weeks, Diego became eligible for adoption. Several potential adopters came forward, including Ramirez. Ultimately, Wise and Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society deemed Ramirez the ideal dog parent for the rescue pup.

In a Facebook comment, Mutt Misfits Animal Rescue Society wrote, “This sweet boy has recovered beautifully and found his forever home. He was adopted by the person who rescued him!”

We can’t think of a happier ending to this horrifying story than that.
