Clear the Shelters: New York Rescue Urges Adopting Longterm Residents

Shelters across the U.S. participated in “Operation Clear the Shelters” for the month of August. One New York rescue took the opportunity to promote adoptions for dogs who have been there longer than others.

The Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) waived adoption fees on all dogs over 45 pounds until Aug. 31. New dog parents do have to pay $8.50 for the dog license charge — a small price for a forever friend.

On their TikTok, the New York shelter invited users to get a deal on their “new best furfriend” before the offer ends. The shelter is trying to re-home the dogs who’ve been staying there longest, incentivizing their adoption by removing their fees, reported NewsWeek. Talk about a clever promotion. The video, which shows dogs waiting to be adopted, starts with the message, “I’ve been here a while. Take a look at me first.”

@nycacc All ACC dogs over 45 pounds will be a part of “Clear the Shelters” and have their adoption fees waived until August 31st! The fee waiver does not cover the NYC dog license fee of $8.50. Katy Hansen, director of marketing and communications at the ACC, told Newsweek that some of their charges have been at the shelter for more than 200 days. Understandably, they are desperately trying to re-home as many as possible to make room for newcomers.

“This is a problem across the nation right now and it has been steadily increasing since the beginning of the year, adoptions have gone down, but animal surrenders or keeps [sic] going on,” said Hansen.

About Clear the Shelters

Each year through Clear the Shelters, NBC and Telemundo stations nationwide team up with shelters and rescues — more than 1,300 organizations last year — to help find homes for pets. The campaign has helped more than 700,000 pets find furever homes since the national program first started in 2015.

During campaign month, donations can be made online to participating shelters and rescues through the Clear the Shelters Fund. Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site cover all transaction fees. By doing this, 100 percent of donations go directly to shelters and rescues. One news station reported on Aug. 31 that there were 413 animals adopted from the participating shelters and rescue groups during the month. Well done!
