Dear Labby,
My family is thinking about getting a dog, but we have no idea which breed to get. We have a medium-sized “double house” and don’t want to disturb the neighbors. We also have a rabbit. My dad would like a Beagle or Border Collie–something loyal–and I would like a Basset Hound. My mother and sister would like a Bichon Frise, Pomeranian, or Cavalier King Charles Spaniel–a cute little lap dog. And finally, my mother isn’t allergic, but doesn’t want lots of shedding. Please help!

Bewildered And Fido-less Family Looking for Excellent Dog
Although not really a petiquette question, B.A.F.F.L.E.D., I’m letting you slip in on a technicality. You did, after all, mention not wanting to disturb the neighbors. Plus this gives me a chance to promote the one-of-a-kind Dogtime matchup tool – an uncannily accurate method for figuring out your canine love match. Ok, not necessarily “uncannily accurate,” but a great way to get you thinking about what kind of dog would be the best fit for your family.
Most dogs are loyal when treated well. They can thrive in any size house, as long as they get plenty of mental and physical exercise. As for shedding, check out our list of low-shed dogs.
If you visit a shelter, you may be surprised that the dog who wins your heart is neither a Beagle, Border Collie, Basset Hound, nor lap dog. Let us know who you wind up bringing home.
