Ryan Gosling’s French-speaking dog co-star pays homage to wife’s dog
Ryan Gosling’s latest film, “The Fall Guy,” has a dog character who exclusively responds to French commands, as The Independent reports. Gosling has shared that the animal is based on a real pet dog his wife, Eva Mendes, owned. Directed by David Leitch, the film had its premiere at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, on March 12, 2024, captivating audiences with its unique portrayal of the furry companion and Gosling’s performance.
In the film, Gosling, aged 43, plays a stuntman thrust into a murder investigation. During the investigation, he unexpectedly gains a furry companion, an Australian Kelpie named Jean Claude. This dog exclusively comprehends French commands.
Gosling disclosed, “Eva used to have a dog named Hugo, who was a Belgian Malinois and an attack dog. And he only spoke French.” Continuing, he added, “He’s passed now, so this is my homage to him. I miss that dude.”
Additionally, the 48-year-old director David Leitch emphasized that adding the dog’s character enhanced the entire film. In his words, “It was another inspired idea from our creative sessions, and we wanted to bring this additional character into the mix … The character just took on a life of its own.”
Furthermore, Leitch is a well-known enthusiast of dogs, and had previously been photographed with his beloved canines for a photoshoot, as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Another movie dog recently stole Gosling’s heart when he appeared on Hollywood’s biggest award night. Earlier this week, a video of the “Barbie” actor’s reaction to Messi the dog from “Anatomy of The Fall” applauding in the audience at the Oscars became an internet sensation.
